Going Back in Time: Iconic Bags of the 1950s

Going Back in Time

Hermès Kelly
When first released, this was called the Sac à dépêches. It wasn’t until twenty years later that it became truly iconic when Grace Kelly used it to hide her pregnancy. And so the “Kelly” (inquire at Hermès) was reborn. There are few bags like it. The Fendi fashion top handle ($2,210) gives you a little taste.

Chanel 2.55
This is another one that’s stood the test of time. The quilted bag (inquire at Chanel) and its chain strap were inspired by the floor tiles in the nunnery Chanel grew up in and the chains the nuns their would carry. If you’re still saving up to get yours (and get one you must!), MICHAEL Michael Kors has a clearly inspired Frugal option (on Zappos for $298).

Etra Frame Bag
Frame bags were all the rage in the ‘50s, and Etra was one of their biggest purveyors. Go authentic with a vintage blue number (on Etsy for $38.95) or modernize the style with Comes with Baggage’s fun phrasing (on Comes with Baggage for $288).

Wilardy Lucite Handbag
Another trend was lucite box purses (small yet hefty!). The originator of the style was Wilardy – short for Will Hardy. This marbleized one (on Etsy for $230) comes with a mirror on the inside. Pretty convenient, no? Pieces like these are hard to come by today – the modern lucite bag is a sleek clutch à la Rafe (at Neiman Marcus for $395).

Enid Collins Kitsch
Today we have Charlotte Olympia. In the ‘50s, Snobs with a love of kitsch had Enid Collins. Her bedazzled designs covered everything from owls to flowers to cornucopias. In fact this Flora box (on Etsy for $140) is pretty tame compared to most. For something truly show stopping, pre-order Dolce & Gabbana’s gold filigree mini bag (on Luisa via Roma for $5,950).
